Portal cranes can be divided into two types based on the nature of their legs: spatial rigid legs and planar flexible legs. The intermediate rigid support legs have good spatial rigidity, which can withstand both horizontal loads within the support leg plane (horizontal load of the crane) and horizontal loads within the gantry plane (longitudinal horizontal load of the crane); The rigidity of flexible support legs in the plane of the gantry (perpendicular to the plane of the support legs) is poor, so they can only withstand horizontal loads in the plane of the support legs. Large span gantry cranes often use one rigid leg and one flexible leg to prevent rail jamming caused by temperature changes.

Portal cranes are classified according to leg types: L-shaped, C-shaped, O-shaped, and U-shaped equally box shaped open legs; There are solid belly closed legs and box shaped closed legs with and without a small car passage. L-shaped and C-shaped legs are mainly used for single girder gantry cranes, while O-shaped and U-shaped legs are used for double girder gantry cranes, with U-shaped legs widely used in tire type container gantry cranes.
